Depression, anxiety and relationship conflict are common concerns that I frequently address. But just as often, people come with a vague sense of there being something in their lives that is "not quite right." It may be experienced as a lack of motivation, feeling "held back" in life, making poor life choices over and over again, getting entangled in old, repeated patterns of behavior, or a general sense of dissatisfaction and uneasiness in life. Regular individual therapy provides a safe, uninterrupted space where we can explore and think together about your experience. Using a psychodynamic framework, I am especially attuned to your feelings in each moment, family history, life experiences, and current stressors--and how each of these contributes to the issues your bring to therapy. The relationship we develop over time is an especially important resource, because it offers an opportunity to directly examine and explore these issues in the room.
Coming together with your spouse or partner in couple's therapy takes courage--courage to commit to the 'work' of therapy, courage to show up to reveal your feelings and experience in the relationship, and courage to open to those of your partner. Together, we explore communication and patterns of relating that are often rooted in the early life dynamics of each individual. Often, they are patterns that serve more to protect than to connect.
I welcome couples in all stages of relationship and am friendly to straight and same-sex couples alike.
General
I think of family-building in broad terms. Whether trying to conceive 'naturally', through medical intervention such as IUI, IVF or Donor Egg/Sperm, adopting a child, or deciding to remain without a child, I respect each as a personal and meaningful path.
Some of the ways therapy can help:
For those embarking on donor egg, donor sperm, surrogacy, or donor embryo, I offer recipient consultations (usually required by your fertility clinic) and ongoing supportive therapy. During our meeting, we may discuss any issues of interest or concern to you. In addition, it is an opportunity to process some of the typical issues encountered when using donor gametes to conceive.
Deciding to remain without children often comes after a prolonged effort to conceive and can be a painful decision for some. Therapy offers a safe space within which you can begin to envision and create a fulfilling future.
